The goal of WRC’s Girls Leadership Program is to enhance the interest, abilities and character of adolescent girls, resulting in enhanced self-esteem and leadership skills. This twelve-session program is offered during the school year to girls in middle schools in southeastern Pennsylvania. At each participating school, guidance counselors and teacher teams nominate twenty 7th and twenty 8th grade girls with leadership potential to take part in the program. Facilitators conduct weekly meetings for each group of 20 girls at space donated at their school. The sessions are facilitated by a graduate level human service professional skilled in working with youth.
The program provides a chance for girls to develop the following skills:
Identifying leadership qualities Strengthening communication, decision making and problem solving skills Becoming more assertive Developing a voice and sharing it with others Developing a positive self image Exploring career possibilities in the working world Caring about their communities.
Girls in the program also get a chance to hear from female community leaders and role models.
WRC is currently offering this program at eight middle schools in Chester, Delaware and Montgomery Counties. The Girls Leadership Conference will be held at Radnor Middle School February 20th, 2010.
